Haemorrhoids

Enlargement (varicosity) of the haemorrhoidal veins, which are situated in the mucous membrane outside and inside the sphinter ani. When the outside veins are swollen, it is called Externnal haemorrhoids, and when the inside veins are involved, it is called internal haemorrhoids. If one of these veins burst during evacuation, it is termed bleeding piles and when it does not, we call the condition blind piles.

Haemorrhoids may be caused by
1. Portal hypertension
2. Habitual constipation, especially of persons taking spicy foods and alcohol.
3. Pelvic diseases e.g frequent pregnancies, uterine displacement and growths in that portion.
The most common symptom is rectal bleeding. This consists of fresh blood coming generally at the end of defaecation, particularly when it is associated with constipation.
Pain on defaecatioon. This pain is more marked, when the haemorrhoids are prolapsed or strangulated in between sphincter and muscles.
Fissures may be associated with piles.
Anaemia may be associated with the frequent passage of much blood in drops separately from piles.
One must Avoid liquor and coffe. Drink water often. Eat little meat and take plenty of exercise, and wash the parts with cold water when piles doo not bleed.
